The Oroua-Bunnythorpe Road.
TO THE KDITOB OF THE STAB. Sib, — I observe that during my absence in Wellington, some remarks were made at a meeting of the Feildirig Borongh Council to the effect thif the l* ditty, -of trying to get the Oroua-Bunnythorpe Road proclaimed a main : road derolred upon the Manchester Koad Board rather than on the Council, and therefore I; a« Chairman of that Board, was out of place in Stirling up the Borough Conncil to move in the matter. In reply, lejk me state what the Road Board and myself, individually, have done to forward 1 * the constrnction of a work which is of great importance to Feilding, as tending '■ to bring into that town the business of the— — large number of settlers who -are or will be located on the lands, adjoining the railway line across the Oroua;— -1. The road in question is not in the Manchester Road District at all, as stated in the Council, but .in that of Manawato. ■'• 2. Notwithstanding this fact, the Manchester Eoad Board applied last year to flare it proclaimed a mam road, and I. spent some time and trouble when in Wellington last session in trying to have effect given to the Board's application, but was refused on the ground that the Government considered the railway -sufficient means of communication, as far as they were concerned. 3. 1 got £300 roted by the Manawatu County Council, and expended on this road during 1881-82. : 4. In conjunction with Messrs Bailey and Bull, I waited en the Manawatu. $pad Board, and we presented: so strong i, cat© that the Board, though . short of funds, granted us £100, which was duly spent, and was the first retnrn the settlers fronting the road had secured for, in, some cases, 10 years rates. 5. X have on two or three several occasions represented to qur member the necessity of having a foot bridgeiattached to the railway bridge at Bull's mill. 6. Though last, not least, I wrote a letter to the Feiumng Stab the other day, which has stirred up the Bar* ough Council to a tardy recognition of the importance of this wort to the Borough, and caused them to call a pnblio meeting to pass the resolutions presented last Thursday by Mr Bartholomew and myself to Mr Johnston, which resolutions will, I believe, hare their doe weight. Having thus answered the charge of accusing others of a neglect which I was equally guilty of with themselres, I will conclude by saying that Ido not regret one word I wrote jn -the letter to you, calling the Council's attention to this work among others, and after the Council gets orer the irritability which no doubt' affects local bodies when suddenly awakened, as well as individuals, I beliere that body will see the matter in the same light that I do. — I am, &c, • , P. H. MACAJtTHtTB.
