The Huia Accident.
THE EDITOB OF THB PEIIDINO STAB. Sib,— The fact of two persons having recently fallen over-board from the Huia steamer and been drowned, and both cases within only a few days of each other, calls, in my opinion, for some investigation as to iho probable cause, as in neither case does there appear to have been any fault on the part of the unfortunate victims. My own impression, received - ,-.•; from a little experic nee and observation, is that on nearly all our coasting steamers the rails, which are ostensibly provided for the purpose of preventing persons fa ling overboard, are not nearly high enough. I remember once coming up on to the deck of a steamer while off Kapiti Island for the purpose of trvmg to get a little relief from sickness, and I believe had I not immediately returned I should, simply from the lowness of the rails, have been in great danger of going over. I think the rails might easily be made of such a height as to almost entirely prevent such calamities as those which have just happened. — I am, &c, Tbavbllbb. *; * . . ■ : J.
