Honor the Chief Justice. After an e*X haustive trial the jury returned a rerdict of " Guilty, with a recommendation ? to mercy." Before passing sentence; Bis ""^ Honor was informed that the prisoner was enciente, and a jury of matrons was ordered to be empannelled for the pur- _ pose of taking the case into consideration^ ' * The usual question, whether th«, prisoner had anything to say why sentence of death should not be passed, was put to . the prisoner, who was perfectly unmored. She stated that she did not hear what was said. The question was repeated, but there was still no answer. Mr Hutchison eonfered with ker t r amd explained that the matter of pregßari^y would be investigated tills mormbgX The prisoner replied, " I hare nothing to ffy." Solemn silence was called in Court, and the Chief Justice assumed the black cap, and passed sentence of death as follows: — I think it unnecessary to say anything to the prisoner, as it seems she cannot . very well hear. I may say that the jury -< have arrived at the only conclusion to.. - which, upon the evidence, they could - hare arrived. The sentence of the €ourt is that you, Phoebe Veifch, be taken from here to the place of execution, an<f there be hanged by ihe neck until you are dead. Remove the prisoner, and let* her be brought up to-morrow at 10 o'olock for '. the investigation by a jury of matrons. The prisoner was then removed. ■ '■
