Fire at Invercargill.
« A CHILD BURNED TO DEATH.
J [PER UNITED PEESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, April 27. At 12 o'clock last night a fire broke out in a small wooden tenement in Port Chalmers, occupied by Mr James Holden, fisherman. The local brigade and the police were quickly on the spot, but ifc was impossible to saTe anything. It having been reported that a child was missing, Mr Dodson, commenced a search among the 'ruins, and discovered the charred remains of Mary Holden, aged two years. Mr Holden in company witl* one of his sons, left home at 7 o'clock last night, and whilst on the bank fishing he noticed that the honse was on fire; He was too late to save anything. Mrs Holden states that, she lay down on the bed, without undressing, alongside ofthe deceased, at about 9 o'clock,, and was wakened by the crackling of the flames. She jumped put of bed and ran into the street, leaving the little girl in the bed.
