Feilding Borough Council.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Lewers, Butherford, Worsfold, Loudon, Fowler, Sherwdl and Thompson. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. Letters were read as follows : — From Mr Macarthur, complaining of the tone of the Council's resolution passed at the last meeting, re his letter in answer tc tho Council's application with reference to the trusteeship of the Becreation Ground. From MrChurcher, asking the Council to fell some rata trees adjacent to bis property in Sherwill-street, as it would not be safe for him to fence until they were removed. Mr Macarthur's letter was received, and laid on the table. Besolved, on the motion of Cr Sherwill, seconded by Cr Loudon, ihat Mr Churcher's application re the felling of trees be refered to the Works Committee. - Cr Loudon said he need scarcely mil the attention of the Council to the want of a few lamps at the most frequented parts of the town, especially at the approach of the Post Office and Railway Station. He then moved, That Mr Hill have erected four street lamps similar to those erected in Palmerston, one next the Postmaster's residence in Stafford itreet, one in Manchester Square, one at crowing of Kimbolton road and Warwick stieet, and one at crossing of Manchester aad Grey streets. This was seconded by Cr Lewers. The Mayor said there were many things wanted worse than lights. Cr Lewers was of opinion that few things were so necessary as some lamps, as it was positively dangerou-*, especially to strangers, to walk about the streets at night, and he sincerely hoped th* Council would see its way to pass the resolution. Cr Sherwill said that judging from the cost of supplying the lamp*} at the Eng* lish Church the cost of supplying a few lamps for the town would not be a Tory considerable one After considerable discussion the resolution was put, and a division called for, when three only voted against it. Besolved, on the motion of Cr London, seconded by Cr Sherwill, That an ordinary rate of Is and a library rate of Id. in the £ on the rateable value of the Borough property within the Borough, for the year ending 31st March, 188 _>. Be struck in accordance with the notice advertised in the Feilding Stab, said rate to be payable on the second of May nex\ CV Rutherford moved, and Or Loudon seconded, That applications be again in* : ted for the office of Borough Banger. Cr Butherford said that it was, high •*i rue something was done in the matter, as the present arrangement for the vangership to be done by the Constable was anything but satisfactory. Cr Lewers thought that this action was altogether premature, and that a fair and proper trial of the matter as now in the hands of the Constable had not been made. Cr Thompson thought that no derisive steps had as yet been taken by the Constable in the matter of keeping the streets clear of stray cattle, and it appeared to be a question whether he intended to do anything or not. Cr Worsfold said that he had been informed Constable Price was doing something, and had given owners of stray cattle noiice of ihe consequence ef reoffending. A Tier fu^iher discussion it was decided fo le.ive the mailer with the Mayor to sne:* k to the Constable thereon, and request him to be a little more siringent. By permission of tbe Council the resolution was withdrawn. Besolved, on the motion of Cr Loudon, deconded by ( r Fowles, That Mr Beaufort's offer received at the last Council meeting to keep the library open till 4 ■>.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, )*>t,tead of the present hours, be agreed to. Besolved, That the Council meet again on Thursday, 3rd of May. f The Council then adjourned.
