Mr Bryce at Taranaki.
(PEE UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, This Day. Last night the Alexandra hall was crowded for the purpose of presenting an address to the Hon Mr Bryce. The Mayor presided, and the Town Clerk read an address which chiefly dwelt on ihe false impression that appeared to be abroad, that the settlers here wished to encourage disaffection amongst the Natives in order to benefit from money spent in keeping an armed force in the place. Mr Bryce, on rising, was cheered. In replying, he said he had not expected such a demonstration as had been accorded him. He had met with an unexpected reception from the Natives at every Native village he had passed through. He spoke in the highest terms of Te Wetere, who had accompanied him, and that he (Bryce) was the first representative of the Crown who had passed through the King country, which was now opened. In referrinc to Mr Hursthouse, who was on the stage, he said he (Bryce) was not the man to send another to do a dangerous task that he was not prepared to undertake himself. The Mayor, Captain Wm Bayley, called for three cheers which was heartily responded to. Three cheers were called for Hursthouse, Newsham and Te Wetere, and the most enthusiastic meeting evor held bore came to a close. '
