A TRAGEDY IN LEEDS.
James Carling, a herbalist, living in Hedlev- street, New Wortley, Leeds, recently murdered his two children, aged 8 and 3 years, by poisoning them, and afterwards committed suicide by cutting his throat. The deceased, who had been low spirited for some time past, poisoned his children while his wife was out shopping. Mrs Carling, on returning, found the house locked up, and being unable to gain admittance, passed the night at the residence of a relative. Next morning the house was forcibly entered, and the children were found — one dead and the other dying, and Carling with his throat cut. He had evidently take, poison, but finding that insufficient, he had cut his throat with a razor. Prior to committing the deed he had written three letters, one of which was addressed to the coroner, in which he said he had for several weeks suffered dreadfully from pains in the head, and his desire was to put an end to his painful existence. The jury found that he had murdered his children, and then committed suicide.
