The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 1883. DIRECT STEAM SERVICE.

«> The conditions ol the contracts for direct steam communication with Great Britain reached the Government in Wellington by the last inward San Francisco mail. The tenders close on the 30th of the current month, and the conditions are for a steam service between London, calling at Plymouth, and New Zealand, once each way in every calendar mouth for a period of three years. Not less than five ships are to be provided, each being a firstclass screw steamer with adequate power to perform the service within the time specified. The service from London to New Zealand is to he performed round the Cape ot Good Hope, and the service from Zealand to London via the straits of Magellan, or round Cape Horn, calling at St. Vincent each way. The voyage is to lxperformed within 1,200 hours, except for the outward service which may be performed in 1,-00 hours if so stipulated in the tender. The contractors are to have the option each voyage of selecting the port of arrival or departure in New Zealand, either Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, or Port Chalmers, and wilt be at liberty to call at any or either of these pores on giving 30 days' notice. The Government does not undertake to send e-nt-granrs by any ship or to guara.r.e to send any particular number, hut any emigrants which the Government may deem it convenient to send trom the United Kingdom to the colony are to be carried. Government does not guarantee to send Government cargo by ship, but tbe contractor's ships are to be employed if they are so constructed as to carry the same. Each ship is to be fitted with freezing chambers and machinery, so as t. be capable of carrying on the Homeward voyage fresh meat and dairy produce up to 200 tons of cargo space. Tenders will b. opened by the AgentGeneral and Postmaster-General respectively at noon on the oOch inst., and the decision of the Government will be made known'on the 31st May. The Government do not bind themselves to ?ccept the lowest or any tender, and reserve to themselves the right to accept a tender subject to the ratification oi the General Assembly of New J? en! aud.
