LOCAL AND GENERAL.

«. We have received the report of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for lebruary 22nd. The money market in Wanganui shows marked signs of improvement, and business is gradually assuming its normal condition of activity. This change is desirable, as business of all kinds has been very slack since the beginning of the new year. The Feilding Anniversary Committee met at Hoe's Hotel on Monday evening, and made still further arrangements for the forthcoming celebration. The Secretary, with Messrs Gosling, Nicholas and \i orris were appointed a decoration committee, and we understand that some very pretty and appropriate decorations are to be introduced. Sometimes passengers by train are put on short commons at the Hal combe station refreshment rooms. On Monday morning last the only provisions available for four hungry men who were in need of breakrfast consisted of ham and eggs for two and cold German sausage for the rest. No reduction was made in the charge of conrse. Mr Morris has just had erected a large drying shed, and obtained a stock suitable material for manufacturing oilskin coats, &c. Some of the samples we have seen are strong and really well made up. Persons who wish to defy the elements during the coming winter will do well to supply themselves with some of Mr Morris's weather-proof garments. The Annie Hill completed her loading of 95,000 feet of timber on Tuesday last ! at the Wanganui wharf. She was loaded by Messrs P. and J. Bartholomew for Townsville, . Queensland. Tho Augusta is also being loaded for Eockhampton by Messrs Richter, Nannestad, and Co., of Trondheim. She will carry 100,000 feet. Mr F. Browne is the agent of both these vessels. The cultivation of oiive trees in the j public gardens at Christchur<h has so fur proved a great success. The truncheons from which they have been reared were so dry when received that it was considered that the attempt to strike them would be futile ; but, contrary to expectation, the 100 truncheons have yielded 1000 healthy young plants, and are expected to produce an equal number next year. •■ • ' . - •. . In cases of fraudulent concealment of assets in bankruptcy, it would be interesting to know whether the statements of property rendered to the Property Tax : Department could not be brought as evidence against slippery customers who, though they might render ; unfair statements to the Property Tax Office, would in many instances, find it difficult to, account for the disappearance of certain assets, the existence iof -.which could be proved by their Property Tax returns. Before the rising of the Eesident Magistrate* Court yesterday, Mr Ward, 8.M., referred 'to the approaching departure of Mr Andrew, Thomson to Feilding where he has been promoted to be Assistant-Clerk. Mr .Ward spoke of Mr Thomson's abilities and trustworthiness in high terms, and expressed the pleasure' he experienced at finding that, though Mr Thomson was leaving ,Wanga~ nui, he would still be in office within his Worship's district. — Chronicle. At the next meeting of the School Board of the Wanganui District, an application will be made' from the Beacons* field school committee . for i th.e<appaintment of a teacher, so that school operations may be at once commenced pending, the erection of a schoolbouse, tenders, fpr which' hare, we believe; already been let to a Marton builder. We commend the settlers of Btaconsfield for their enterprise, and for their persistent efforts to educate their children. They; have' long Agitated this important matter, and we are glad to see that there is at last some good prospect of their efforts being crowned' with success. ' ; v; '

A qmnrtty of grass seed arrired from Cliristchurch this morning, to the order of Messrs Hair om be and Sherwill. Captain Edwin telegraphs i — Bad weather approaching between north and east and south-east; glass falling soon, and indications of rain after twelve hours. It is probable that Sir William Fox will be a candidate for the Inangahua seat in the House pf Representatives, should Mr Weston carry out his intention of resigning. During the past few days a number of larrikins have been indulging in bathing in the Makino Stream, close to the Man-chester-street bridge. The proceeding is most objectionable, and should be put down at once. "We direct Constable Price's attention to the matter, Mr Duvall, Government Insurance Agent, returned to Feilding this afternoon, having made a complete tour of the Lake district. He went to Taupo, via Fields track, and returned via Napier, the Journey of over srtO miles being made without a change of horses. The trial of Thompson, stationmaster, and the guard, Hunt, for manslaughter in connection with the Hawthorn (Vis* toria) railway accident in' December last; has been concluded. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty in each case. On Sunday last the Rev. R. Fennell, who preached in Mr Murray's absence, announced that the usual monthly lecture given in the Presbyterian Church would be postponed until Sunday, the 11th March. The subject will be duly announced in our columns. The last Gasette contains the appointment of Andrew Duncan Thomson to be Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court at Feilding, and Clerk of the Licensing Committees for the districts of Kiwitea, Manchester, Oroua, Kawakawa, and Feilding vine A. R. T. Haultain, from the Ist March. Among the gossip circulating in sporting circles (says the Melbourne World) is that during the present year a party of English footballers will visit Australia, and play a series of matches with the leading clubs here. Such a game, doubtless, would excite a great deal of attention, and would not only prove a profitable tour, but exercise a beneficial influence upon the game in the colonies. On Saturday evening next at the Town Hall, Feilding, Mr Harry Power, assisted by our local amateurs, will give an enter* tainment which promises to be universally attractive. Miss De Glorian will act in her usual charming manner, and will add greatly to the pleasure of the audience. We fully expect to see a bumper house as the selection of pieces is well made. We refer bur readers to the advertisement. Mr Ainsworth, the well-known and old-established bootmaker of "Wanganui, calls attention by a new advertisement to the receipt of three direct shipments of goods from England, France, and Germany, as well as to the stock of his own manufacturei Mr Ainsworth has been nearly 50 years at his trade, which fact, together with his good workmanship and low prices, should be a sufllcient attraction to his establishment. This is situated in Victoria Avenue, and is known as the " Corner Boot ,-Shopj" or to quote from the advertisement itself — " Everybody knows it." Some time ago (says the Post) we mentioned that it was the intention of the Goverment to do away with return tickets on the railways, but so to reduce single fares that the double journey would be performed at no greater cost than at present. The new table of fares has now - been gazetted, and will come into force on the 20th inst. As an illustration of the way it will work, -we mey explain that whereas a 20-mile journeyformerly- oost 5s Ist class and 3s 4d 2nd class one way, or 7s 6d Ist and 5s 2nd 1 for the double journey; it will now cost only 3s 9d Ist class and 2s 6d 2nd for the single journey, while the double journey Will cost 7s 6d and 5s respectively as be-^ fore. Saturday ttnd Sunday tickets wi 1 be issued at reduced rates available till Monday night. ; , .
