ISTEW ABEIVALS.
Some thousands of new settlers arrived in Feildin.u on Thursday last. These consisted of a fine colony of Ligurian or yellow Alpine bees, a variety which has obtained grest celebrity for their peculiar characteristics, and their superior advantages in every way over tbe ordinary black (bees. They are«truch larger and more graceful in form, have -a far less propensity to sting, are much more industrious, working wben the -other bees are idle, are extremely hardy, swarm much earlier, and lay -ap -a far greater quantity of honey, while another great advantage in an agricultural district is that by the much greater length of their proboscis they have the capability, not possessed by the ordinary bee, of fructifying the red clover. This swarm has 'been imported 'by Mr Brandt at a -cost of 4> guineas from the Matawata Apiary, near Auckland, and have arrived " safe and sound." The Ligurians have only been introduced into New Zealand a little over two years, and Mr Brandt is, we believe, the first importer of them into this district. We may mention that the bees are easily -distinguishable from the -other kind by their beatiful shape and-appear-ance.
