THIS DEPUTATION.

+ Messrs Fbt and Lethbbidge returned on Monday night from Wellington, wher c they had been to interview the Minister of Justice, with a view to the re-appoint-ment of a resident Clerk to the Bench in Feilding. The Minister was pleased to say, after he had heard the reasons for such an appointment put forward, that " something ought to be done," and that he would look into the matter. As we foretold from the beginning, objections would be raised, or the request quietly shelved, until the people got so accustomed to do without the official required that they could dispense with his services altogether. We have not the slightest intention of permitting this, and will endeavor to keep the injustice done to Feilding continually before the eyes of ! the citizens. We all know to our cost what is meant when a Minister says a thing or promise " will be kept steadily in view." It means that the thing or

promise will never be accomplished, unless the Minister is forced to do it whether he likes it or not. We said it was some subordinate official who was the prime mover originally, and we were — as usual — correct, for "we have a knowledge of these things." We will wait but a very short time, and if the result of the deputation's efforts is not satisfactory, we will again call on the public to take further steps.
