Meetings are being held with the object of having the Counties Act suspended, the administration of affairs by that body being viewed with disfavor by the ratepayers. Chkistchurch, Feb. 6. A prisoner named Saunders was seriously injured to-day by being struck j on the back of the head with a piece of , rock, the effect of a blast. His skull is fractured, and he is not expected to survive the injury. I This Day. A man named Aiken, 80 years of age, was found drowned in the river, al Heathcote, yestsrday. It is supposed he committed suicide. E. J. Lee announces himself as a candidate for the Selwyn seat. The Maori, Ratuna, charged with murder at Kaikoura, bas been lodged in Lyttelton gaol to await the next session of the Supreme ( 'ourt. There is much activity among the newly-enrolled Volunteers ; parades are well attended, and with punctuality; good recruits are busy drilling, and picking up their duties rapidly. Wellington, This Day. The property-tax paid for the financial year amounts to about £100,000. Thursday, the Bth inst., will be the last day upon which the tax can be paid without the addition of the 10 per cent, penalty. A shock of earthquake was felt here at 10 o'clock last night. It was felt also at Kekerangu.
