THE FOXTON RACES.
The first meeting, under the auspices | of the Foxton Racing Club, was beld at ' Foxton, on Monday last, (Anniversary Day). The weather was fine, but towards noon the heat was intense. The "Wellington Artillery Band, under the leadership of Mr George Grey, discoursed some (excellent selections of music at various intervals during the day. The was good, and each event ;attracted svery fair " fields." The stewards performed their duties with great •energy, and gave entire satisfaction to all i (Concerned. Praise is due to the untiring " •^secretary:, Mr -John Russell, for the jnanner in which he fulfilled his various offices. A capital luncheon was provided ;by the proprietress of Whyte's Hotel, which was done ample justice to. Towards the close of the meeting a most sserious accident occurred, resulting in ■the instant death of one horse, and severe , iinjury to another. In the hack (flit) race one of the bystanders, mounted on .•a horse, the property of a chemist in Foxiton, made an attempt to cross the course just as the competing horses were coming up the straight. The man referred Ifc • above had barely got half way acoss, when the " field" c.ime upon him. Notice of Motion, who was leading, got past ;Safely, but not so with Glorious, who iran into the " outsider," and knocked him down, breaking his neck. Glorious ihad his shoulder put out, but both riders <escaped without the slightest injury. JVlessrs Hill and Poole had one of their vtotalisators on the ground, and did a wery fair business. The mid-day train to Foxton conveyed a large number of persons to the races. Some 9X> people vsvere on the ground. Appended is the .'result of .the.day's racing :— Handicap Hurdle Race, of 30 soys. — 1,; New Year, 2; Highilander 3. Hack Hurdles, of £7 10s.- Glorious. Maiden Plate, of 20 sovs.— Hipporina, ■1 ; Whili ßangu2.; The Orphan, 3. Pony Race, of 3 soys. — Eoromiko. 'There was only one on the winning pony ;in the totalisator, the dividend being £24, <6s. Foxton Racing Club Handicap, of 60 :sovs.— -Orphan, 1.; >"ew l r ear, 2.; Cain<ellia, 3. Ladies' Purse, of 28 soys. — Scrutineer, ~>1 ; New Year, 2.; Banshee, 3. District Handicap, of 15 soys— Orphan, ■1; Athlene, 2; Comet, 3. Hack Race, of 7 soys.— Notice of .Motion, 1; Gorse, 2.
