FEILDING ANNIVERSARY.

A public meeting was held at the Den•bigli Hotel on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of considering the advisableness of celebrating the anniversary of the settlement of Feilding as a township, and what steps should be taken to organise the celebration. There was a capital attendance, and considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. It was re* solved that His Worship the Mayor should preside, but Mr Lethbridge begged to be excused simply on the ground of his not being so immediately interested as some of the older settlers, one of whom he thought should preside Mr H. Worsfold was then voted to the chair, and said tbat the object of the proposed anniversary was to bring together the old settlers of the township — in other 'words, to form are-union o£ those who had come out from Home determined to make a new home in a new country, and to establish a township on the Manchester Block. This they had done, which he thought called for mutual ■ congratulation, and it was deemed by many to be a fitting object of a little rejoicing together. He would not dictate as to what form the celebration should take, or how the proceeds, if any, should be appropriated. He simply suggested that the anniversary was generally considered to be desirable, and called upon those present to express their views on the subject. Mr Morris proposed that any profits arising out of the proposed celebration should be given to the Feilding Benevo- . lent Society. Mr Lethbridge asked what was the date of the first settlement in Feilding.. Mr James said there might be some differences of opinion as to that, and he , thought it was quite immaterial, the principal idea being to celebrate the thing itself, rather than any actual date. After some further discussion it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr Cooper, seconded by Mr Daw, that the anniversary of the settlement of the Manchester Block be duly celebratedIt was further resolved on the motion of Mr Daw, seconded by Mr Hoath, that Messrs Nicholas, Toy, Morris, H. Worsfold, James, and the mover, be ap-. pointed a committee for carrying but the celebration of the anniversary, with power to add to their number, five to form a quorum. The Chairman, on" behalf of the meeting, asked His Worship the Mayor if he wou'd kindly lend his patronage and aid to the movement, and he replied that it would give him much pleasure in doing what he could to make the affair a success. He also consented to become a member of the committee. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting dispersed. The committee then met for the preliminary business. Present — Messrs Daw (in the chair), Worsfold, Nicholas, Toy, Morris, James, and Heading, the latter name having been added. •iesolved on the motion of Mr Nicholas, seconded by Mr Morris, that Mr W. Heading be appointed secretary of the anniversary committee. Resolved on the motion of Mr Nicholas, seconded by Mr Toy, that the anniversary be held on St. Patrick's Day, viz., Saturday, March 17th. Resolved that the next meeting of the committee be held at Mr Daw's residence on Tuesday, January 23rd, at 8 p.m. The committee then adjourned.
