A terrible catastrophe has occuired at j Berditehev, a town of Southern Russia ! in the Province of Kiev, during a j crowded performance at a circus in ihat , town. The fire broke out and spread j rapidly, and a general rush from the in- . terior of the circus ensued. The exits j were blocked, aud many persons were trampled to death in their efforts to es- j cape. It is estimated that fully 300 per- , sons have perished. The scene is described as terrible. The catastrophe has created a great sensation, and is only second in magnitude to that which occurred at the burning of the Ring Theatre, Vienna, in December, 1881. Constantinople, .January 15. It is leported that a band of Circassians made an attempt upon t ie life of the Sultan to-dny. The guard at tbe palace, however, prevented the entrance of the would-be assassins. It is stated that the Circassians fought desperately, and ihat several lives were lost. The reports have caused considerable excitement here, but they .require confirmation. London, Jan 15. Additioiv.il tenders to the amount of £100,000 have been received for the Victorian loan. The list will be closed on Wednesday next, when any ballance un« applied for will be withdrawn.
