FATAL ACCIDENT.
A most distressing accident, resulting in the death of aa elderly man named Gardener, occurred at Palmerston, on the evening of the 10th instant. The deceased was driving a horse and cart near the Terrace End Station, when the horse gave a slight start forward, probably being frightened by a train which was approaching at the time. Mr Gardener fell out of the cart and was killed instantaneously, the wheel of the cart passing over his head. The circumstances attending the death are very painful. Mr Gardener and his wife only arrived there on Friday evening from Home, which place they left at the request of their son, who resides at Ashurst. Thus, the same train which had, twenty-four hours previously, conveyed him to his new home, was the means of causing his deatlu At the inquest held there on Monday, the jury returned a verdict of *' accidentally killed." The jury also added a rider censuring the railway authorities for permitting the habit of using a whistle as an approaching signal, and the necessity of using sonae other signal.
