The Hon. John Bryce visited his estate in the Kiwitea cu Monday last. Extensive improvements are being made by Messrs Bailey Bros, to their sawmills at Taomii. A man, well-known in Feilding as German Jack, was drowsed in the Wangachu River on Saturday last Mr Mcßcth, of Kiwitea, had a good burn a few days ago, of 100 acres of bush recently filled. We understand that the bush was fired accidentally. We regret to have to announce the death of Mr P. Bartholomew's infanL daughter, which took place on Monday morning last, (New Year's Day). The funeral took place yesterday. The death is announced of Leon Gambetta, the great I'reneh orator, statesman and journalist. He was born at Oahorg, of a Genoese family, October 30th, 1838. He died January Ist, 1883, aged 44 years. The work of repairing the damage done to the tramways at .the Taonui sawmills, by the recent bush fires is now being r ipidly pushed forward. It is probable that the whole will be completed in a fortnight, when the cutting of timber will be pressed on to overtake orders. During the month of January, those desirous of having a trip to Wellington via Foxtoa, by the s-s. Jane Douglas, have an opportunity given them which should be taken advantage of. We learn from the Chronicle that a Califoraiaa salmon weighing 14?lbs was killed by a Native recently, in tbe Makirikiri stream about 200 yards from the Wanganui Eiver. A photograph of the fish has been taken by Mr Martin. Mr S. H. Drew has undertaken to preserve . the fish. We tjongratulate our Wanganui friends on the success that has attended their efforts to introduce this valuable fish into their streams and rivers.

A rifle match was fired at Marton on Saturday between teams representing the Manchester Rifles and the Royal R'fles. It resulted in a victory for the Marten men.
