SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT FOXTON
On New Year's Ere the signal gun of tthe -Jane Douglas was hoisted from the •steumcr on to the wharf where she lay It was intended to fire a salute at midnight to welcome in the New Tear, and after the first discharge the amateur gunners proceeded to reload the :gun, without having fir»t spunged it out tto remove any sparks left by the previous •discharge. Mr Clark, the engineer of sthe Jane Douglas, was loading, and \Jr /Xabott, a wharf hand, was assisting, and -when Mr Clark placed the cartridge in ?the gun, Labatt forgot to stop the vent <witb his thumb in the usual manner. If ie had 'done this it is probable the accident would not have happened. As it twras the charge prematurely exploded, severely burning Clark in the face and •body. Labatt was burned in the face by the discharge through the vent hole. Mr ■Clark was taken to Wellington for treatment, and Mr Labatt came to Feilding to fiut himself ia the hands of Dr Johnston. Me Is now doing well.
