As the train from Palmerston, which arrives at 9 p.m., was nearing the city, and just as it had got to Castle-street, crossing the street entrance to the railway yard, a man who was observed standing by the rail, suddenly threw himself in trout of the engine across the rails. He was shockingly mangled, and death was instantaneous. The body has not as yet been identified. This Day. The victim of the railway accident on Thursday nig&t was Henry Martin, aged 19. It now appears that death was occasioned by pure accident, and the fatality was not tbe result of suicide. AsHBU'iTON, This Day. A well-known sheep dealer named John Meiklejoha bas been committed for trial on a charge of stealing 510 sheep, the property of Sir John H_ll. Wellington, This Day Nothing has yet been decided in the case of George Longhurst. New PL__rocr_H, This Day. The Auckland cricketers played the New Plymouth eleven yesterday. New Plymouth made 130 runs in their first innings. The Auckland team lost six wickets for 17 runs, and when the stumps were drawn there were seven wickets down for 58 runs. Haweba, This Day Hawera won the return match with Auckland by an innings and 45 runs. CHBisTCHr-B-H, This Day. A boy named Leonard Post was convicted at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning of breaking into 'the shop of Messrs Gould and Co., chemists, with th* intention of stealing therefrom. He was ordered to be sent to the industrial; school. He had previously been seven , times before the Court ou charges of lar- i eeny, and had been whipped twice. Ac -K_an_>, This Day. Warrants have just been issued for ' the arrest of Miriam Hamilton, and Tnonias Griestley, Presbyterian student, j charging them with the wilful murder of '-. the former's husband, Hugh Aitken, at ! Milton, who was supposed to have met his deatb on the night of the 28th ult., ! by falling head foremost upon the edge . of his bed. King Tawhaio with 60 followers left Alexandra yesterday en route for Napier. Patea, This Day. The affairs of the Patea County Council have for some time past been in rather a peculiar state. The Auditor's report is published in tbe Mail and shows tbat mere are considerable deficiencies in the county funds, caused through the Clerk not accounting for names received by him. 'I he report occupies over six columns, and makes some interesting disclosures. Sharks .re v .usually pbntiful along tbe Coast. At Whenuakura alone the ' Maories have captured over 700 this season. Mr Thompson, who engineered the breakwater here, has beea re-appointed engineer to the Harbor Board and has been instructed to prepere plan, of work i he considers of most use at the Heads.
