[peb united PBESS ASSCOIATION.] Balclutha, Dec 1. Edith Annie Smith, servant to Mi Russell, stationmaster at Stirling, fell from a carriage when the train was nearing Stirling last night. She was conveyed to Balclutha and attended by Dr. Smith. She died at two o'clock this morning. An inquest will be held to-day, Lateb. The inquest held on the body of tht girl Eliza Smith, who fell out of a railway carriage, showed that death resulted from an acci ent, and that no blame wa: attached to he rail aay officials. . Sir John and Lady Hall and family purpose leaving by the ship Ladj Jocelyn, which is expected to sail from here in "January next. Dunedin, This Day. Mr Robert St_>ut will contest the Peninsula. At a meeting to-day it was agreed tt entertain Mr Archibald Forbes at a public banquet on Tuesday night. Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., the Hon. W. J. Rey. nolds, the Rev. Dr Stuart, and Mr Jol Wain, president of the Caledonian Society, were the leading men present. An individual who began by giving pound notes away for 18s at the races yesterday, afterwards gulled the crowd by giving them worthless watches, &c , for their money. On a demonstration being made against him he flourished a revolver and decamped. Two cases of sunstroke occurred last week at Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu. One was fatal to a little boy ten years old. At the Balclutha Police Court or Wednesday William Wilson was committed for trial at Dunedin for indecently assaulting a Mrs Twaddell, at Witepeka. Auckland, This Day. Edwin Smith, chief of the United States Transit of Venus party here, has recovered from his severe indisposition. Arrangements for observing the transit are well forward and nearly completed.
