They intended to return in a whaleboat which they took with them. Whe» near the headi, the lighter drifted towards the beach, and Campbell got into the whaleboat and let sail, in order to tow the lighter off shore. s oon after a heavy sea struck the whaleboat which filled and sank, Campbell going down with her. When the vessel came to the surface Gray called to Campbell to get on the lighter. He seemed quite cool, and replied, "Wait a bit till I get the lashings off." He raised his arms as if to do so, when another gea swamped the whaleboat, and she turned over with Campbell underneath. Gray arrived here last night. Campbell leaves a widow and family, the latter mostly grown up.
