WELLINGTON FROZEN MEAT COMPANY.
| «. . It is satisfactory to learn from a reliable source that nearly £40.000 of the required capital — £00,000 — has been already invested in the new company which has been projected with a J view to taking over Mr Gear's butchering" and meat preserving- business in Wellington. It is anticipated tint in a few days' time the formation ard registration of the company will be completed. Mr Gear whose experience is of infinite value to the undertaking, will retain a large in'erest in it and act as Managing Director for a period <>f at least one year, thus insuring skilled and careful piloting in its initiatory transactions. Up-coun-try settlers have reason tu congratulate themselves on the prospect thus held out of an extention in a business that for years past has been of such important service to them. It is a matter, however, of extreme regret that a rumour is being circulated to effect that overtures are being made with the object of bringing about an amalgamation of this Company with the Wellington Meat Export Company. 'I here is plenty of scope for the successful operations of both enterprises without fear of their inter ests clashing. Moreover, it would be most advantageous to the settlers to have more than the one outlet for their stock. The want of such facility has, indeed, been long felt in the country districts. We warn them that every possible endeavour should be made to prevent such an amalgamation as that contemplated from bring effected. The result would simply mean a huge monopoly of the whole meat business of the Provincial district by one large concern in the City of Wellington, a consummation which coulj not but operate injuri <.usly as regards the stock-owners. Those of them, therefore, who formed the Freezing Company will do wisely to hold faß( to their own position, and refuse to countenance in any way innovations with to suicidal and disastrous tendencies. We trust that our "word in time" may at least serve to put them on their guard. — Wairaraj>a Observer.
