SAD CASE OF DROWNING.
I • We learn by telegraph that a woman named l.etitia Bryant fell off the wharf at Auckland, into the water. Captain Tye, ot the Alexandria ferry steamer, jumped in after her, but was unable to render any assistance, as he could not swim. After a few struggles the woman sank, and it was noticed that Captain Tvne was drowning. The steamer's boat which was Ly this time lowered, picked up Captain Tyne, as he was sinking ihu third time- A man named Rose jumped off the wharf, and swam to where the woman was last seen. He dived twice, and succeed in bringing her to the surface ; she moved her arms once or twice, and died. Her husband is a carpenter, and is left with five children to lament her death. Captain Tye jumped into the | water on the impulse of tlie moment, forgeltiii" he could not swim. While Rose was iti the water his clothing and £5 Oi Jtb" in tiie pockets were stolen. The perpetrator of this mean crime must be related to the man who sto e Captain Beveridge's binocular and watch while the captain was in the water saving the lives of women and children in Charleston Harbor (West Coast) some years ago.
