[PKB UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION.] Chkistchurcu, This Day. Elmswood House, the residence of Mr I{. H. Khodes, on the Papamu Road, was burned down on Wednesduy afternoon. Must strenuous efforts were made to save the house. Amid the crash and fall of debris, and slates shooting in small avalanches from the roof, the firemen entered the burning building, and carried out all the property they could lay hands on. The insurances are sn id to amount to £7,000, the I'nion and Royal Companies being heavy losers. At the inquest on the body of the man named Peiry, killed in a fight at Hororata, a verdict was returned exonerating Truman Jones (not Hobbn as telegraphed) from blame. The evidence showed that Perry was in an unhealthy condition, and the excitement had killed him. Mastertox, This Day. At Brancepeth, yesterday, a bushfeller named James Duncan, aged 18, had his leg crushed by the falling of a tree. He was removed to the Ma.sterton hospital, but died this morning from the shock to the nervous system. Wfllington, This Day. Nominations for the Wellington Cup close on Monday night at 10 o'clock. It has not yet been decided what yacht will represent Wellington at the Lyttelton regatta, but either the Thetis or the Comma will be sent The Star Club will also <end a rowing crew down to compete in the principal event. Another Mormon meeting is advertised for to-night. To night all the Volunteer offcers who went to Parihaka last year will be entertained at dinner at the Club by I apt. Johnston, of the Is' aval Brigade. Dcnedin, This Day. A gale of extraordinary violence was experienced on the Carrick Range- So great was the force of wind that a dray and three horses were blown over, while an unfortunate miner, who was caught in a blast, was lifted clean off his feet and hurled in the neighboring gully. Keefton, This Day. Gassier and party, alluvial miners at Marina, within a mile of the route of the proposed East and West Coast Railway, report the discovery of quartz reef forty miles from Reefion. in the direction of Christchurch, and near Cannibal Gorge.
