DEFACING BANK NOTES.

The Bankers Act Amendment Act, which conies into force on January Ist, 1883, contains the following clause, which it will be well for all parties to keep in mind, who, in the way of business, are in receipt ot a number of bank notes. Clause 15 states that any person who commits any of the following acts, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding five pounds, to be recovered in a summary way : " Any person who, after the issue thereof, defaces any bank noto by writing, printing, stamping, or marking thereon his name, or the name of any person, or any matter relating to the trade, business, or occupation, of any person, " being party or privy to any bank note being defaced as aforesaid, pays away, parts with, puts in circulation, demands payment of, or offers to deposit in any bank any bank note so defaced. It shall not be deemed an offence to endorse a bank note for the purpose of identifica- | tion." ____________
