LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Fresh butter is being sold in Feilding at 7d and 8d per Ib. We regret to announce the death, yesterday, of the infant daughter of Mr W. Carthew, from congestion of the lungs. There was a Church parade of the Manchester Rifles on Sunday last, and about thirty members attended. Messrs Bartholomew and Bailey have chartered four more vessels to cany timber to Australia, all to be loaded in Wanganui. • Our report of the Makino-road Concert, which appeared in last Saturday's issue, contained a slight typographical error. The name Mrs Holden should have appeared Mrs Holder. That wretched eye-sore — the leviathnn stable— still adorns the Kimbol ton-road. The hand of Time is beginning to add somewb.it to its untoward appearance, and the posting of many placards on its walls by " itinerant players" is also adding to the " effect." It would assuredly grieve the heart of the designer of this edifice to see the ruin that is overtaking such a work of architectural genius. Our attention has been drawn to a nuisance which exists in close proximity to the Feilding State School, and which, if unattended to, will ultimately affect the health of the residents in that neighbourhood. The nuisance in question is a large pool of stagnant water, and -with a continuance of the present hot weather, is likely to prove a means of disseminating disease amongst the pupils attending tbe school — a very undesirable contingency. The authorities should see to this matter at once. Persons having horses and cattle runing at large, and thereby liable to poundage, will find a knowledge of Borough Bye-law No 46 useful : " Cattle, whenj being driven to the pound, may be released by the owner paying to the poimd keeper, previous to such cattle being impounded, the sum of Is per head for great cattle, in nddition to an amount sufficient to cover any damage which may have been caused by sucli cattle."

There was a brilliant meteor observed here on Sunday evening last, about 9 o'clock. Measles nre very prevnlent at Sancton just now, and the attendance at the State School is at present very small from this cause. Mrs Lang try is said to have refused an offer of £100 for each performance, for a visit to Australia and New Zealand, after her American tour. The 30,000 members of the Church of England in the Provincial District of Otago, contribute towards the support of tlieir Church just one penny per head per week. The whole of the timber trucks on the railway line are required to carry the timber forwarded for shipment to Foxton and Wangnnui. It is probable th;it new trucks will be completed shortly. The English Lord Chamberlain has laid down a rule that a medical man shall be in every theatre at every performance. It is not said who will pay the medical men. We suppose that the "Dead Head" pass will be called a "Medical! Certificate," enabling the holder to enter | a show free. Owing to some misunderstanding about the leasing of the l'ul lie Hall, Captain I Barry did not give his lecture last night. In order not to dis.api-oint tlie public, he will lecture to-night in the Denbigh Hotel sample rooms. A large attendance is anticipated It is probable that Captain Barry will visit Awahuri and Sandon during this week. The Feilding Library was opened today at the Borough Chambers. Temporary shelves have been erected for the acconrmodation of the books, of which there are several hundred volumes, | comprising 174 works of fiction ; history, 22 ; travel, 16 ; science, 22 ; poetry, 12 ; general literature, 17. We understand a good number of applications were made during the day for books. On Sunday evening next, being the sth of November, the Rev Mr M urray will lecture on the " Lesson of that day's Anniversary." As the various attempts to upset Governments by assassinating their leaders are of peculiar interest to everyone, we expect to see a crowded congregation, and have no doubt of the ability of the lecturer to fairly depict these events from the day of Guy Pawkes to the late atrocities of Russian Nihilists. Our attention has been directed to the prjsent condition of the Public Pound. The mud is about a foot deep, and thfe condition of cattle and horses doomed to spend a few weary hours within its fences is pitiable. The Borough Council should see that something is done at once. The revenue that the present energetic Ranger is pouring in to the Borough coffers by poundage fees should justify the expense. The attention of persons whose duty it, is to register the death of any deceased person is directed to the provisions of "The Registration of Births and Deaths Act Amendment Act, 1882," which requires that when the death of any person who may have children surviving is registered, the age as well as the sex of each child living at the time of such death, is to be entered in the register of death. The good offices of the benevolent and charitable are invited in aid of the Manchester Benevolent Society. The funds of this very estimable institution have lately been submitted to a severe strain. The persons receiving aid at present are two families, consisting of two adults and six children. The general public have not been called upon to subscribe for nearly two years to this fund. Any contributions may be forwarded to the secretary, Mr E. H. Wright, or the Treasurer, Mr H. L. Slierwill. The Manchester Rifles will, on the 9th instant, the Prince of Wales' Birthday, be divided into 2 squads for the purpose of firing a friendly match, Captain Lethbridge taking charge of No 1 squad, and Lieut. Booth No 2 squad. The men having been fairly chosen for the different squads, a close contest ought to result, and as the company provides refreshments on the ground free to all members, the match should be a recommendation for a strong muster. No 1 squad will also fire for classes on Saturday next providing the target is replaced by that time. _^_____^__^_
