We regret to have to announce tho death of the youngest daughter of Mr D. Jt. Lewers, which occurred yesterday morning. Mr llydes hud been residing for sometime past at Sydney. j Mr Greenwood, dentist, from Wanganui, has been in Feilding the last day or two, and has been well palronisod by persons whose instruments of mastication needed professional attention. Mr Forsfer has accepted the appointment as Clerk of the Court at Wellington, and Mr Haultaiu will take up his duties at Palmerston, and retain those at Feild ing at the same time. Before Mr D. E. Nathan left Wanganui for San Francisco on Monday last, via Auckland, he was presented with a very handsome silvei inkstand by Mr Frank Evans and his family. A suitable incription was engraved upon it. We are in receipt of the first number of the Mataura Southern r'ree Press, printed and published by Joseph Mackay. This new candidate for public favor is well advertised, and its reading matter is interesting, being carefully prepared and selected. The Patea Evening News has come to an end, and the plant has been purchased for removal to another district. In taking leave the editor says that the News has had many compliments paid to it daring the fifteen months of its existence, but something more was needed to give it sustenance. Intelligence was received on Monday from Fo^fcon, to the effect that a man, name unknown, had been found drowned there, supposed to b« Clarke who was missed at Palmerston some weeks ago. -Some of Clarke's relatives went down by train yesterday to identify th;> body, and to be present at the inquest. At the last sittings of the Supreme Court, Judge Richmond congratulated ! the Wanganui people on being residents of a most respectable and sober place. The hotel-keepers wish it was a little less sober. Times are not too brisk when the magistrate's courts show an utter absence of " drunks." We are requested by the Borough Ranger to contradict a local which appeared in our last issue, to the effect that one of Mr Arnott's children had been knocked dowu by some horses the R.-mger was driving to the pound. We willingly make tins contradiction, but would add that the information was supplied us personally by Mr Aruott. A cricket match between the Manchester Cricket Club and a Sanson team takes place on Saturday next. The following are the names of the local team: — Messrs Nix, G. Bartholomew, Smith, Roe, Fe.iron, Bailey, Evans, Fowles. J. W. Eade. Greenwood, and Halcombe. Emergencies : Messrs Sherwill, Jackson, and Rowley. At a summoned meeting of Court LoyaJ, Feilding, A.0.F., the quarterly balance-sheet was read, showing that the sum of nearly £20 had been added to the Sick and Funeral Fund. The Court is now in a most nourishing condition, having gained 25 members during the 9 months of the present year. During the evening 2 new members were initiated, At the r»eent Bordeaux Wine Exhibition several of the Australian colonies stood high in the list, as the subjoined Renter's telegram will show ? — "Victoria look nine first, fifteen second, and nine third prizes, together with five honorable mentions. New South Wale 3 took five first, nine second, eleven third prizes, and two honourable mentions. South Australia two first, four second, three third prixes, and five honourable mentions. The heavy rains on Saturday evening last had the effect of creating a heavy fresh in the Makino Stream. On the following day (Sunday) traffic was suspended on tho Awahuri lioad, the road in places, together with a large area of Mr James Whisker's property, being entirely covered with water. Wo have not heard of any serious damage being done beyond the loss of one or two sheep by Mr Whisker, and other damage to fences, crops, &c. The Makino bridge was somewhat strained, and portions of the embankments on either side the stream were washed away. There was nlso a fresh in the Kiwitea Stream, and some damage resulted therefrom to the roadside approaches.
The date for tlie collection of the property tax is not yet fixed, but it will pro>ably be in January. The cargo of white pine for shipment m the Mary Bannatyne, Wang.inui to Sydney, is now being rapidly forwarded by the charterers, Messrs Bartholomew •i ud Bailey. Addresses wer<- delivered by tlie President of ihe New Zealand Weslevan Conference, viz., Rev J. A. Taylor, of Now Plymouth, and also by Keys .W. J. Williams, of \V\mqanui, \V. Worker, of Simson, and R. Fc'u.icl, of l-ViUia^. One of the bridges erected over the Kiwi tea by Messrs OoYpe and Son, sawniiilers of Makino, was washed away bj' the flood caused by tlie rains of Sunday night lust. As the timber was being cuton the further side of the stream, all the logging implement s hail to be brought out of the bu^h to the Kimbolton-road, and caited back to the mill via Fending, so as to enable logging operations to be conducted on this side the Kiwitea during the reconstruction of the bridge. In the neighborhood many acres of bush land were under water. The particulars of the Waifaki railway accident are hs follows. When the engine was a short distance from the bridge, from some unknown cause it jumped off the line in the cutting. Tiie waggon next the ergine waa also thrown off the line and fell on its side. Tho couplings of the first two carriages snapped to pieces. The first carriage was not upset, but struck the cab of the engine with great violence, and became a complete wreck. ihe second carriage was materially damage.!, while tlie other two carriages and van left the line, but wore not damaged. Several of the passengers were severely injured, while the engineer and fireman had a most miraculous escape from instant death. An official inquiry is now being held by the railway authorities.
