Takana te Kawa, an influential chief . of the Ngatikauhata tribe, well-known in this district and throughout the Waikato, died at Awahuri on Wednesday afternoon. Though said .by the Maoris to be sixty years of age, he appeared to be much younger and qnite an active man. Howeve.-, . as their ,c ironolo^y is based upon their recollection of the cessation of cannibalism, it cannot be said to be authentic. Takana and his wife, Pobe te Ara owned most of thelagd which is leased lo the whites in this vicnity as well as blocks in other localities. A large tangi is to take place as soon as the Natives arrivt- from' Waikato, whence they are summoned for the purpose.
