FOOTBALL MATCH.
WANGANUI V. MANAWATU. (special reporter.) The return match between the above teams, came off on Saturday last, on the^, gmund of the former. The following** were the players: — Wanganui: Forwards: W. Smith, Stewart, Gower, Alexander, Aiken, Hackett, Allison, < 'lifford, Powell; Backs .- Hassell, Marshall, I hompson, Grey, Craig, and P. Smith (Capt.), C. S. Cross (Umpire). Manawatu : — Forwards: Dawson, Stallard, Snow, Hounslow, Jones, Wheeler, Sinclair, Booth, Goodbekcre ; Backs-. Broughton, Salmon, Ware, Clark, Svondsen, \. Smith (Capt.), Caverhill, (Umpire). The game commenced at 2.4-5 p.m., to enable the visitors to return by the 5 p.m. train. Manawatu kicked off, and almost immediately a force-down was obtained by them, followed closely by another force-down for Manawatu. In fact it seemed for a few moments as if Manawatu were going to score an easy victory. However, after the first five minutes, Wanganui " buckled to," and began to show what they really could do. The ball was quickly carried down to the Manawatu goal, and remained it its immediate neighborhood for the remainder of the first 20 minutes' spell. The second spell was somewhat more evenly contested. Marshall and Stalhnd made some really fine runs for their respective sides, while A. Smith made a capital drop-kick. Marshall ran with ;h.3 ball and touched it down, but the umpires decided that he had failed, before doing so, to place himself on the right side of the goal line. Tlie third spell was eniirely in favor of the Wanganui team. Thompson made a really fine run, but was unable to get hehind the goal line. Marshall then ran in but was collared by Brought on. A maul in goal ensued, and Broughlon succeeded in forcing the ball from his adversary. Subsequently Marshall obtained another touch-down. P. Smith in kicking, however, failed to score a goal. The ball was well followed up by Grey, and the crowd, interfering somewhat with Goodbehere's movements, ob'.aiued another touch-down. The try was taken by Phil Smith, who was again unsuccessful. The fourth spell was erenly contested. Marshall obtained two touch-downs, and the tries were taken by Phil Smith, who was, however, unfortunate in both cases. The end of the fourth spell left Wanganui the victors by four tries to nothing. The Manawatu team may nevertheless be complimented on their plucky play throughout. ■'• mongst those who specially distinguished themselves for their respective sides and iu their various pl.ices were W r anganui: Thompson, Marshall, Clifford, Hackett, and P. Smith. Manawatu : A. Smith, Salmon, Wheeler, Stallard, Clark, Jones, and Sinclair. I should like to add that the visitors were entertained at lunch at the Commercial Hotel (McLevy's) by the Wanganui team, and I must say that both sides displayed an immense amount of friendliness for their opponents. A large number of outsiders were present, but I am sorry to say but few ladies. Perhaps the keenness of the wind may account for this.
