MANAWATU COUNTY COUNTY COUNCIL.
. «. — . At the Council meeting yesterday the following report by Mr Bray, overseer for the northern rdings, was read : — MANCHESTER RIDING. The completed roads in this riding nre now in very fair repair. I have during the month had to put on a quantity of metal on the Palmerston Gorge road, to keep it good. jM essrs VVarne and Beard are making rery slow progress with their contract for delivering the timber for the Manawatu Gorge bridge. They had delivered about 80,000 feet up to the end of August last. KIWITEA RIDING. The completed roads in this riding are in fair repair. John Aitken will finish his contract for putting in the bridges and culverts on the Eimbolton road in a few days. He has not yet commenced his contract for the erection of the footbridgo over the .Kiwitea stream on the continuation of Mackay's line. TAONUI RIDING. Rangitikei Line. — The metal on this road is worn very thin in many places. During the .moutliT have had a portion of it repaired, and it still requires from 100 to 150. loads of metal to repair the remaining portion. There is also one small bridge that requires new decking. Karere Road. — This is in very good repair with the exception of the watertables, which require cleaning out. Stoney Creek Line. — This road is also in fair repair, except a few bad places, which will require 50 or 60 loads of metal put on. I have examined the bridges along this road and find that the stringers in three of them are very much decayed. Two of these bridges can be repaired and made safe for traffic for a short time by bolting pieces of timber to the sides of the stringers, but the stringers in the other bridge, near Mr Edwards', are so much decayed that the bridge would not be worth repairing. This bridge consists of 12ft 6iu spans at each end, and a 29ft span in the centre. I would recommend that the two short spaus be taken out and filled up, and the centre span made into an 18ft span, whidi will be quite large enough to take all the water. There will then be enough timber taken out of the old ibridge to make the 18ft span except 5 posts and two sills. Messrs Sherin Bros, are progressing satisfactorily with their contract. By order of tbe « hairman I have called tenders for repairing and lengthening the Awahuri bridge.
