FEILDING PUBLIC LIBRARY.

It appears as if this very desirablein-, stitution is to be forgetteW- Altogether, ; and consigned to oblivion. Although some' steps were taken towards handing it over to the Borough Gouncii come : months ago, yet nothing tangible appears to have beep done towards thatrftnd. To-, an ordinary 'oDSterVer it would" appear' that those who are personally interested in the progress of education are the Inost indifferent in a matter that concerns them and every-one'dep-ndkhtup-h them. It is a reproach to Feilding that it has neither a public library nor a -reading room, to which the studious may resort . for information, oorr r the more frivolous /for hapmless^ amusement. It is a great thing to get people to read at any time, and is a positive and>direct'jbenefit»to;a community to cultivate studious' habits. We certainly think that our local clergy ought to take some action, and stir up their congregations. When proper pres-. sure is brought to' .bear,' the Borough Council might certainly assist the promoters in getting a room suitable for the purpose. Contributions in the sh. ape, of books could be solicited, and would be amply responded to. In the first movement n\ade (towards . forming <a, library in Feilding some hundreds of volumes were donated. These are still on hand to form the nucleus of a first-class library. The main difficulty of making a beginning has already been got, over, so that. there is little or no excuse for the town to remain any longer without a public library and free reading room.
