MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
A special meeting was held yesterday in the Council Chamber, Foxton. Present — D. H. Macarthur, (in the chair,) Councillors Hadfield, Bruce, Sanson, Mcßeth, Douglas, McLennan, Gray, and Rockstrow. The meeting was called for the purpose of rati tying certain transactions between the Councillors for Awabou, Kawa Kawa, and Oroua hidings, and the Government, with reference to the purchase of iron rails for the proposed tramway between t arnarvon and Sanson. The Chairman read the requisition and introduced the business of the meeting. Cr Rockstrow moved the following re solution: — "That this Council adopt the r-port of the Committee re purchasing 700 tons of permanent way from the Government, and that the. Councillors for Oroua, Kawa Kawa. and Awahou, be appointed a standing committee to carry out the construction of a tramway from Carnarvop Junction to Sanson, according to the' terms jirovided by law ; -provided also that the cost of such tramway and all expenses connected therewith be paid by the above-named ridings." Cr Sanson seconded the resolution, , Cr Dougias ipoyed tb» fallowing amendment : — " That this Council does not think it, advisable - to ratify the bargain made with the Government for rails for the Sandon- Carnarvon tramway by , oun- | cillors Bock-trow, McLennan, ahd San- | son, until the ratepayers of the three 1 ridings affected hare been consulted, and have signified their acquiescence in the matter, and until their ridings have been .shown to be. in such a financial position as tp be able to bear the Habilitywithout h__ipering ; the other ridings." * "
, Seponded by Cr Bruce., i , / Cr McLeonan opposed the amendment. Cr Bruce opposed, the resolution. ( Cr Sanson aid, j*ot approve of Councillors expressing , their sympathy with the object of the train way and then opposjag it. The tramway was bound to be had, and what they wanted was to seize the present opportunity of purchasing th.c rails from the .Government under 'considerable advantages. Cr. IjL&dfield also opposed the amendment.
Cr Douglas asked permission to withdraw his v a_-,endme_t. — Permission was
granted. The origiital motion was put and carried unanimously. •■''•--
The Council then adjourned.
