Ihe committee decorated the hall with flags, which gave it a very pleasing and presentable appearance, the colors^ •blending: prettily with the gay dresses and uniforms of the devotees of of Terpisehore, the number of whom was large, some 40 or 50 couple being in attendance. - - The catering was left in the hands of Mr Summers, who, with his assistants, were kept busy throughout the evening in supplying the pressing and various wants of the dancers. Their efforts in i this respect gave entire and general satisfaction. Capital music was provided by a" Paimerstonr band, under the leadership of Mr Harbofct, who 'was ably assisted by Messrs Jodie and Smith. As we-said before thes'' ball was most successful and thoroughly enjoyable, and will long be remembered with feelings of unalloyed plensure by all who took pairfr therein ; and the gay company, feeling the spiror of Byron's lines— On with the dance, let joy be unconfin'd; No sleep till morn, when Youth and Pleasure meet, To chase the glowing hours with flying feet, . . tripped- it merrily with unabated vigor till the small hours of the. morning. It would be an unpleasant task to name the bell of the ball where so many could lay claim to the honor, but we will content ourselves by saying (and in doing so will please. our fair readers generally) that many of the dresses were exceedingly pretty and in excellent taste. The gathering passed off without the slightest hitch of any kind to mar the enjoyment of those present. In closing our brief notioe, we must congratulate the Manchester Rifles on the success of their annual ball, and sincerely trust tbat its successors ia future maybe as su cessful. We must also accord a me :d of praise to Col-Sergt. Nicholas, the courteous and energetic Secretary.
