PETTY THIEVING.
RESIDENCES VISITED. MONEY STOLEN. During the holidays some petty thieving has taken place in the Bom-j bay, Puni, Pukekohe East/ and Hiar-j risville districts. In each casd residences have been visited and sums of money stolen. It is known that five residences have been entered. The Pukekohe police have been investigating the matter and have a good description of the, alleged thief, who is said to be a splendidly built man of medium height, and well dressed, wearing a blue serge suit and a felt hat or a cap. It is said that his method has been to enter the grounds of the residence, knock at the door, and if the call is answered the housewife or guardian is asked to buy a tin of knife powder, or is asked where so-and-so lives, or is appealed to for a glass of water. If the house is locked up, the occupants being away, it is entered. In one case a residence was entered while the occupants were engaged in another part of the house. It is surmised that the thief is operating from Auckland, and that he rides a bicycle. The police require all assistance possible with the object of running the man to earth.
