MONTHLY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting d the Manukau ’ County Council was held on Tuesday, when the're were present : Crs A. D. Bell (chai man), F. M. Waters, Jas. Montgomerie, J, MV Davies. .J. Luke, F. Granger, tne clerk (Mr E. Ashcroft) and the engineer (Mr W, J- Lopclell)The County ranger reported that during' October he had impounded 162 head of cat tie. and nad collected fees amounting to XT 4s. Of the ■#bove number 50 were impounded from Mjangere Riding and 22 from Clevedon district.—Received. The Medical Officer of Health advised .that as -regards the subsidy paid by the Council towards the salary /and travelling expenses of the Departmental Inspector, it was necessarv that this should be increased from £l5O to £163 pdf annum. The Department suggested that the increased i:ate should date from Ist July last, including the work carried cut during the last quarter. —It was decided to pay the increased amount. Councillors contended that although they were 'against paying the increase. there was no other alternative, excepting that perhaps the present staff coulcl carry out the duties, or that an inspector be engaged, or further ttyit local bodies should combine and engage a suitable man. As fa'r as the staff members doing 'the job was concerned it was oointed out tlyat there would be trouble if an epidemic occurred, At present the whole responsibility was off 'the Council’s shoulders and it was agreed to allow the burden to remain where it was at present. The Mangere Crossing Hall Committee requested the Council to take a poll of the (ratepayers in the proposed special rating area on a proposal to raise a lc*an of £3500 for the purpose of providing a halt and recreation, ground for the Mangere East.—The clerk was instructed; to arrange the necessary details. Sir Fredk. Lang vVrote stating that the Advances Board had agreed to advance the £2OOO applied for in connection with the Mangere Roads Loan of £30,1000. Sir Fredk. also forwarded a copy of the Reserves and other Lands Disposal and Puolic Bodies Empowering Bill, clause 12, of which gives the Council authority to lease portion of a reserve at Mangere to a Board of Trustees for the erection of a Parish Hall. 1 — (ihe clerk and chairman were empowered to sign the debentures when they come to hand;,
A firm of Auckland solicitors on behaL of Mr H. J. Reilly, of Man-, gere, claimed £27 10s as compensation for a cow which he lost through being caught in the bitumen at -the Mangere depot.—The matter of interviewing the County solicitors was left in the hands of the chairman and Gr J- Montgomerile vvitu power to act. Mr James Mcßobeet, ratepayer, (Takanini was refused a license to o-raze 3 cows on the Takanini roads. s in view of the fact that elaborate alterations have been made at Papakura station, two roacls having been formed and metalled by the Railway Department, and before asking the loqal bodies to accept dedication of these •'oacls the metal has to be rolled. The Department asked for the use of the Council’s road roller for a few days —The engineer reported th/at he had hired the roller to the Department to do this work, and his action was endorsed. The Director-General of the Department of Agriculture advised of an Order in Council constituting a Mafaitai-Orere Rabbit District, also that Mr J. G. Christie had been appointed returning officer to hold the first election of trustees for the district. —An election to elect 6 members will be held shortly. At October’s meeting of 'the Council Vt was decided to thank Mr J. P. Sinclair, of Takanini. for his work in assisting to repair the road at Takanini. At Tuesday’s meeting Mr Sinclair wrote acknowledging the expression of appreciation, and added that he would be pleased to do anything he could of the same nature in the future. A petition signed by ratepayers of the Pappkura and Waffoa Ridings requested the Council to take the necessary steps to define a special rating area for the purpose of raising a loan of about £7OOO, so that the Takanini to Clevedon Road could be formed and medalled. AThe petitioners pointed out that the proposed road was the .shorn est route from Clevedon to the ra Iwpy. The roacl would mean cheaper freights, fares and reduced road 1 aulage. The road would also mean closer settlement and would provide facilities for further development of the country wfill be a distinct advantage to the dairy industry of the surrounding districts, and will affect much economy and expedition in the collection of ‘dairy produce, while opart from increasing the rateable value of a large area of lnnd will provide a shorter find much better route to the Westfield stock markets.—The request was acceded to, ENGINEER'S REPORT, The engineer (Mr W. J. Lopdell) reported as follows Mangere Riding. Coronation Road: RemetaUing of this road between the Domain and McKenzie Road has been completed, sufficient metal/ chips 'have been placed at convenient points for bitumen sealing. Walmsly Road: About 30 chains of this re,ad has been defaced with about 370 cubicyards of metal, tolled and blinded. The rest of the road to the Black bridge has been scarified and is now being refaced with crushed metal. Wjaßace Road : This road has been scarified from near .Point Road to the Mountain Road., and is being .remetalled with the crushed metal on the read side near Mr Jas. Wallace’s property. About 12 chains of this roacl has been roiled and blinded with scoria.
Massey Road.; It has been'necessprj to spread about 14 yards of chips ox the bitumen recently put down. Coronation Road : The school hil has also been .treated in similar mpn ner. Quafry All the metal quarried bj the Council has been raked "up anc crushed. The contractors /are now quarrying anti with 6 men in the quarry will keep the plant going. I turntable has been put in which wii assist the working of the stone. Pakuranga Riding, Shines’ Road : Owing to Mr Shine losing one of his horses No. 5 fillirn lyas still to be completed. Botany Road : The watertable. have been ploughed out and the spoi disposed of. The new deck plank; sent to the depot have been put in East Tanvtki Road : The wo/.'st o the watertables have been ploughet out and the spoil removed. Tm worst of the holes on the road haw been filled up wfAh scoryi by lorr; from Lushington’s. Cow Bridge Road : The watertable have been ploughed out and the spoi is being removed. Andrew’s Bridge : Sufficient tmi her came out of the Botany bridg to patch this one up, and ,as it get very little traffic it may l&st couple of years. The stringer: however, are not very sound. Buckland’s Beach : I have a com plaint re dwelling at Buck land Beach. I hope to be able to mak an inspection before the meeting. Papakura Riding. The grader has been in this Ridin during the past month but owin to the unsettled weather very lift] progress has been, made. Tatyanini: Walter’s ccjrner to Va ley Road and Mclnnis” Road ha' been completed. The side track i front of Mr Cox’s store has bee graded, also the Great South Read Councillor Davies and myself visi ed Weymouth and Takanini and tended to the matters delegated t us. Papatoetoe Riding. Dreadon’s Road : During Octobi we completed this road as far as tl County boundary. East Tamaki Quarry: We found it necessary to put in ,a cou ter shaft and (friction winch handle the stone more expeditiousl Turanga Riding Rrookby Hill : The foreman h raked in the metal on this repd, al attended to the culvejrts and wate tables throughout the Riding. Turanga Bridge : This bridge b< been strengthened with a set of x 6 jarrah beams throughout und wheel traffic. It has be< partly redecked which leaves it sa for heavy lorry traffic. Clifton Wfymf and Robinsor bridge have had repairs effected. On the 31st October the fi Council paid a visit to Magaetai ai inspected the new loan Work. Al tc. Buckland and met Messrs Kibb white and Jacobson re ropd cond ions. Minutes have been taken the Council’s deliberations and w be submitted at the meeting. D. Belg. Count; loos Luke, Davies, Waters r and Gr! ger. After discussing matters vt fully the meeting* adjourned at a.m. Wairoa Riding. Foreman Paterson reports that has finished! the work authorised the Council at Orere. The cost vt be worked up and furnished at -t meeting.
