The>re should be a brisk demand 1 for this issue of the N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review, replete as it is with illustrations of, superlative merit and universal interest. The centre pages ,are devoted to a string set of snapshots depicting the Spring Racing Carnival at Ellerslie on ithe concluding day, while thefe are other comprehensive sets relating to the meeting The New Zealand Cup contest at Riccarton shows a specially graphic page representing the race at various stages), while the [Trotting Carnival is also represented in vivid fashion. The Hamilton Racing Club’s' meeting at Claudeiands also occupies a special niche ip the illustrations. The jumping competitions at !the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show ate given particular prominence in a series of wonderful poses caught by the camera. The overseas section contains an unusually fine topical grouping of photographs culled from varied sources. Stage, screen and society have an attractive assortment and in the miscellaneous portion are included photographs of the Central Bowling Club (Petone) Australian Rifle Assocftafion’s championship meeting, N.Z. champion girl swimmers, Thames 'Fire Brigade orchestra, motor cycle racing in Ireland. etc. The pa'per is on sale at all newsagents and bookstalls.
Tuesday last was the fifth anniversary of the battle of Ayun-Karai, which was fought against the Turks in Palestine. A large number of young fellows from this district took part in the engagement, some unfortunely making the supreme sacrifice.
Many of the interjections made at poUitical meetings are entirely devoid of humour* but not so one that was levelled at Mr D. W. Lysnar, M.P-. at the Gisborne Opera iHouse the other evening. The Independent Reform candidate was .dealing with public expenditure and was quoting rapidly a sdries of figures running into the hundreds of thousands.
