FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Borough Council mot on Monday.. when there were present ; The Mayor (Mr John Routly), Crs D. RHamilton, G. IH. Armstrong, R. H. McGough. J. Patterson J. Kennelly. Thos Brownlee, F J Morrow A. P. Daysh, the clerk (Mr J. F. Deane), and the foreman (Mr S- J. Clews). Subway Road. The Department of Public Works, Wellington forwarded a copy of Proclamation gazetting land taken from Messrs Dell and Roulston for the purpose of subway road, a public road. —.Received. Dublin Street Formation. Mr Martin Hogan wrote asking the Council to form and scoria the piece of road from junction of "Dublin and Princes Streets to his entrance.—Referred to Works Committee for a report for next meeting. Franklin Road, The District Engineer of Public Works Department. Auckland, advised thajt payment of £496 14s had been made in connection with the £SOO grant for Franklin Road, which was the amount of formation contract and extras. He pointed out that the culvert was not according to the approved proposal and was not up to the Department’s standard of strength, an.d he trusted that' the payments made were sufficiently close to the amount of the grant to render discussion of question of payment for culvert unnecessary.—On the motion of the Mayor, the Department is to be asked if the work of digging the ditch and erecting walls of concrete was not worth the balance of £3 6s. Access Road. The Franklin County Council advised thajt it strongly supports the attitude of the Borough Council on the matter of Widening approach road to Pukekohe railway station, and was writing to the Minister of Railways and the Prime Minister urging that the Borough’s representations be acceded to.—Received. HeaHhl Inspector’s Salary. The Medical Officer of 'Health wro/te in reference to an account for the Council's share of Health Inspector’s salary, and asked if the Council wou)a not agree to pay the amount of £26 13s 4d that being half the amount of Council’s contribution from February Ist to September 30th* 1922 {The letter was received and? the Council resolved to adhere to its former decision on the matter. Scoria. The District Traffic Manager of New Zealand Railways, Auckland, promised to supply the 2000 yards of medium scoria asked for by the Council, and added that arrangements had been made to supply 1000 yards of the order prior to Novemj ber 3Qth. —Received. Private Water Mains. Mr J. Salisbury asked if the Council would consider the question of taking over the private water main which was put down last year by several Hjll residents outside the Borough —Referred to the Waterworks Committee for a report. Municipal Band. A deputation from the Municipal Band consisting of Messrs Tayior and Stevenson waited on the Council and stated that the Band was anxious to secure another set of instruments* which it was proposed to do by means of ;in arjt union, and asked if the Council would grant permission for the present instruments to be .disposed of. The deputation also asked if the Council could give some financial assistance to help the band l pay rent for a practice room. —On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Patterson, the band was granted permission to dispose of the present instruments, provided that progress be reported to the Council from time to time, as the negotiations proceedMoved by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Patterson, that an annuaL contribution of £lO be madte to the band to assist in paying rent of practice room.—Carried. Rubbish Tip. The foreman reported that he had cleaned up the rubbish tip in Edinburgh Street of which complaint was made at last meeting. The tip had also been fenced and a gate erected. The tip was now in good order. Treatment Works. Mr R F. Webster waited on the Council in reference to the area of land required by the Council for a treatment works under the Borough drainage scheme. He produced a subdivisional plan of his property* but as there was some dPubt about the actual frontage required, it was resolved to refefr the plan to the consulting engineer, Mr T. V. Gulliver for him to mark on the frontage and area he considered should be acquired. Glasgow Road. {The foreman presented a report on the cost of formation of Glasgow Road, showing an outlay of £llß 18s. The report was received and. the foreman was congratulated on the sue. cessful and economical manner in which the work had been carried out. The Mayor added that this was the lowest price for a job he had seen since the war began. Works in Hand. The foreman also reported completion of 20 chains of formation in Glasgow Road also formation of Beresford Street in hand which would be ready for scoria in a few days. Most of the plant for hauling spawls at quarry was to hand. He would be ready to start on East Street next week, and stated that arrangements should be made for carting metal in about six weeks time. A further supply of Union asphalt, was required for King Street which ought to be attended to during the coming summer. This work could be done much more economically if a tar sprayer could be pro* cured —The report was received and the foreman instructed to bring the matter of asphatling King Street be-

fore the Council at a later date, John and Kitchener Streets. The foreman was instructed to report pn the formation of John Street and qlso to prepare the necessary engineering data for cutting down the hill and necessary formation work in Kitchener Road. Garden Debris on Streets. The Mayor reported that when looking around the town yesterday (Sunday) he found that people threw garden debris on the streets. He nerticed this practice was carried on in Queen Street. One of the offenders was a leading light of the newly formed Ratepayers" Association Moved by the Mayor seconded by Cr Daysh that the clerk adveiti.se in the Times -that the practice of throwing garden debris on streets and footpaths must cease, or prosecutions would follow Carried. Loan Money for Fixed Deposit. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hamilton, it was decided to place on fixed deposit at the Bank of New Zealand for six months. £2500, being part of the £3OOO loan received .from the State Advances Office for drainage* and a further sum of £2500 being portion of '-ne £lO 000 loan received .from the Public Trust! Office for roading purposes for a period of three months. Repairs to Footpath. It waq decided to order a truck lead of shingle for repairs to Seddon Street footpath from Albert Street tc the Convent.. Accounts. Accounts amounting to £2072 0s 3d as recommended by the Finance Committee. were passed for payment. The Council -then went in co committee. jTwo tenders were received for the excavation of the swimmfng baths site, and upon resuming in open Council it was reported that the tender of Mr Jas. McCormick at Is lOd per yard had been recommended for acceptance. This tender was accepted The clerk was instructed to call tenders for carting m«tal from Pukekoho East quarry as soon as the necessary data can be compiled. Caretaker for Rest Room. The clerk reported that 'temporary arrangements had been made for a caretaker of the Rest Room at a salary of 10s per week Repairs to Gisborne Engine. The engineer is to furnish a report for next meeting of the Council on the cost of repairs necessary to the Gisborne engine.
