TUAKAU TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Tuakau, Town Board] met on Tuesday night {There were present : Messrs W. J. Taylor (chairman), Jas. Pirret J. Glasgow, J. C. Self, Geo. S. Lapwood, F. G Woolley, and the clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper). An apology for absence was received from Mr G. Ajrrowsmith. Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business, the chairman congratulated the new members upon their election. He extended to them a hearty welcome to the Board tables. ' He trusted that during their term of office they would wdrk harmoniously and if they did 1 so he was sure good results would accrue. The chairman referred to the death of a former resident of Tuakau in the person of Mr Michael Foley. During his residence in the district Mr Folev had- taken a leading part in local politics and from what he could learn he had assisted in the formation of the Tuakau Progressive League. On his motion the clekk was instructed to convey the Board's sympathy to the bereaved widow and family. The motion of condolence was carried in silence, members standing.

The matter of inspecting and reporting on tlhe fence in front of the Methodist Church, which was more or less put into a state of disrepair owing to the excavation work on Hgrrisville Hill, was referred to the chairman, and Messrs Pirret and Woolley. - -. The question of the completion of George Street, from Dalgetiy’s saleyards to the English Chuirch corner was discussed! and on the motion of Messrs Self and Woolley it was decided to' call for , tenders for the work. The engineer was instructed to prepare the necessary specifications for regrading and metalling.

Messrs H. R. Irving,, jT. A. Millear, and Chas. E. Booker drew the Board’s attention to some water which was on the roadside in front of Mr Irving’s property, with a -.request that it be removed at once as the obnoxious oduor was awful and was a menace to the public health. The chairman reported that the Board was arranging with the County Council for attention to the road in question, The clerk was instructed to reply to the complainants accordingly. It was pointed out that owing to a broken culvert the progress of the water was impeded. Mv J. M. Bush, who was contemplating the erection of a house on his property in Jellicoe Avenue, applied for a culvert so as to enable hint to gain access thereto.--The clerk reported that he had instructed the foreman to put the culvert in, the cost thereof to be debited to the applicant. ... The clerk’s action was endorsed. On the motion of Messrs Lapwood and Self, Mr G. Arrowsniitn was appointed deputy-civusrman, Messrs Arrowsmith, Self Woolley and the chairman were appointed a Finance Commit ee It was resolved that the Works’ Committee consist of the whole of the Board. The matter of making arrangements for the erection of a post at the gateway to Mrs Lewis’ residence was left in the hands of Mr Pirret. It was stated that the original post was buried hr a filling on Harrisville Hill On the motion of Messrs Pirret and Self, the engineer was instructed to call for tenders for the Dominion Road allocation. The clerk submitted a report on the Harrisville Rroad allocation, whefein it stated that the bridge cost £527 3s 6d: re-grading £526; labour £145 Is 2d ; printing and advertising £2 16s: pipes £2O 4s 9d ; timber for culvert £4 15s lid , timber piping and labour for fence £24 7s lid: engineer’s ,fee £7O 6s 6d; metal £371 18s ; total £1692 13s 9d ; credit W. A. Smeed account for spreading £l7 17s 2d; £1674 16s 7d. The allocation for the work was £I4OO, but against the £1674 16s 7d there, is a Government subsidy of £SOO to come.

The chairman reported that he had made arrangements with the Railway Department for 10 trucks of scoria. This he pointed out, was to be used "to fill up the gap between the railway line and the Dominion Road intersection,

It was decided! that the ordinary meetings of the Board he held on the first Thursday in each month at 8 p.m. The foreman was instructed to collect all property belonging to the Board and place it in a shed on the Board’s property A number of barrels of ta rat present lying on the side of Dominion Road are also to be carted on to the Town Hall site, while several empty tar barrels are to be submitted at auction. The engineer is to be instructed to prepare pi ans and specifications and call tenders for the loan allocation works on the Whangarata Road.
