PUKEKOHE LIGHTING.
A light that’s causing much distress, A people scenting war — An angry mayor—a busy press— Opinions by the score! The increased rates that roused dispute, And called forth strong protest, And now a further grim salute: “Our engine has gone west!" It’s most disturbing, all admit, This nightly repetition Of light cut off, and candles lit, ’Midst dinner preparation. So we, long sufferers, seek the cause Of power mat's so inferior, And look to Mayor and Councillors To make the outlook cheerier. If they continue in these tracks, All progress soon will vanish. So let them get right down to facts, And inefficiency banish! Then when their schemes meet with success, And arguments cease raising, Perchance they’ll say our little press Is worth a tinker’s praising! —C.F.V.
