CATTLE TICK MENACE.
MINISTER’S REPLY. NO EXTENSION OF POLICY, At Thursday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council the Minister of Agriculture, Hon W. Nosworthy, wrcfe in reply to the Council’s letter to the Prime Minister urging the Government to make the cost of erecting cattle dips to deal with cattle tick a charge on the Consolidated Fund, statfing that sifter giving the matter most careful consideration, he regretted he could not see his way clear to recommend an: extension of the present policy,, namely, the payment by the Government of a subsidy of £ for £up tjo £l5O towards (the construction of dips erected in accordance with thd Department’s plans and specifications and in a position approved by it, it being considered that the responsibility for seeing that adequate facilities are provided for controlling the tick must rest primarily upon, the settlers and local authorities of the districts which are affected. He pointed out that farmers engaged in any particular industry a|*e by law helcj responsible for the control of any pest which may make themselves manifest on their (respective properties, and this, he thought* was "the only! sound principle to follow.
The Qpotiki Cour/.y Council, the prime movers in the mattery who (received a copy of the Minister’s letter, stated that in view of the Government’s aatitude to the proposal, after consideration, it resolved to urge thslt cattle tick should be dealt with in the same way as rabbits, so that districts adjoining infected areas would conribute to the cost of being kept clean. The letters were merely received.
