TUAKAU RECREATION GROUND.
PRESENT AREA SUITABLE. PROPOSAL TO SELL PORTION DISAPPROVED. The proposal to sell portion of the Tuakau recreation ground], the proceeds off which it was suggested should be devoted to the acquirement of a site more centrally situated, was recently referred to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W. F., Massey. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Tuakau Town Board the Premier advised that he had conferred with the Minister af Lands on the matter, and from reports the 'Minister of Lands had received from his departmental officers, it appeared that the present domain was suitable for recreation purposes a ! nd should be retained. It was regretted, he added, that the proposal to ,stll portion of the present domain could not be approved.
The chairman said the Domain Board had treated the Town Board shamefully and disgracefully, inasmuch as they had ignored the Town Board. The outer domain, he added ,/was tan absolute disgrace to any distinct'. The outer portion had not been used for a domain for a number of years, and to his knowledge had never been used as a domain. The chairman of the Dom/ain Board was. sincere in his attempt to raise part af which was to go towards acquiring a (football ground over the domain it made one wonder for Tuakau. In view of his attitude how sincere he was in his attempt to get a football ground for Tuakau.
Mr Sim said he endorsed the chairman’s remarks. It was absolutely shameful how one public body had treated another. It seemed thatthe Domain Board did not have the interests of Tuakau at heart. It was a distinct slut’ on the Town Board, all chances of obtaining a ground in a central position had ben thrown away.
The chairman said -the Town Board’s sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Taylor and Lapwood, had performed their duties in endeavouring to meet the Domain Board faithfully and well. jPhey had done their best to bring about a settlement in larging the Domain Board to met the Town Board for the purpose of discussing ithe piatter. The Domain Board had shovyn ’a lack qf courtesy in failing to meet the Board, and in failing to acknowledge correspondence from the Town Board. M)r Lapwood said the chairman of the Domain Board (Mr H. McGuire) should be excused somewhat), because h© was quite sincere in endeavouring to get his Board together, hut owing ’to a set of circumstances over which he had no control, he failed to get hite colleagues in conference.
Mr Taylor said Mr McGuire had a duty to perform. He should have at the least, replied to the Town Board- pointing out that he could not get his Board together. It would have taken him only a short time to do this.
The chairman agreed with the contention that the Domain Board’ should have replied to the Town Board, and as far as he was concerned he did not think Mr McGuires action was exQUsable. The letter was merely ’received. On the motion of Messrs Sim and Finch it was decided to place on record the Board’s appreciation of the endeavours of Messrs Lapwood and Taylor fo get -th« Domain Board to meet the Town Board to discuss the position.
