CHEAPER BREAKFASTS.
THE POSITION IN AUCKLAND. Says an Auckland writer: —Cheaper breakfasts are more possible now than waal the case a. year ago, and, indeed, the prices of provisions necessary foi setting an attractive table are stated to he lower than for several years, •though the pre-war level has not yet •been reached. Oatmeal and breakfast foods, a grocer said, are a little cheaper than they were at this time last year. The drop in bacon is much more pronounced, amounting to about 30 per cent, compared with July, 1921. A year ago bacon cost 1/9 per lb., and now it is selling at 1/2 lb.; the prices of cuts ranging from Sd to ,1/3. and prime rashers from 1/2 to 1/4. There was a great scarcity of bacon during the war, and -the price of rashers went up to as much as 1/10 to 2/- per lb. During part of the time grocers had to resort to giving customers half a pound and one pound lets in order to make it go round. To-day’s prices are about the same as in October, 1912. Best hams, which cost 1/5 per lb a year ago, are now 1/ per 11). Eggs are approximately the same price as they wore at this time last year. This week's price is 2/4 a dozen. A year ago the retail price of butter was' 2/3 per lb., falling four months ago to 1/4 per lb., and now if is 2/ per lb. Hatty lines of groceries are considerably easier than they were 12 months ago.
