, POKEMG. A much-needed want is being overcome by the residents of Pokeno in the way of a hall and infanlt school. For some considerable time efforts have been made to induce the Education Department to erect a school for the infants somewhere in the vicinity of (the railway station, and save the children a daily tramp of two or three miles to 'the present school. The department a,t fi 'st refused the request, but after the residents offewing to provide the necessary accommodation the request was granted. The building that is being provided is .to supply the double purpose of a school and halL. Considerable interest has been shown by the Pokeno peojpip in the project. The material for the building was purchased by voluntary subscription and the erection of the hall and school is also being carried ou!t by voluntary labour. Mr Bourne, manager of Wallace & Co., knfv'y lent the use of His shed to the residents to hold a dance in aid of the hall and s'c&oL This was held on Wednesday. 17th Inst iind p'rpved a great success, thanks to the ladies of Pokeno and the efficient M.C. The building fund benefited to the extent of £8 14. To further, the efforts and purchase the necessary furnishings a concert and dance is being organised bv local residents,, to take place in the Mercer Town Hall on June 23rd. Some excellent latent has come forward, and the concent "is going to be the best seen £or many years in the district.
