PAPAKURA.
At the meeting of Christ Church Papakura Vestry, it, was decided to .let .a contract for the erection of a Memorial chancel, and the work will be begun within the next week or two. There has been about 40 yards of spawls and a load of sand taken to the church for the workmen to begin with. Those interested in the Parish Hall will be pleased to hear that this bmilding is to be lined shortly and some form of lights are to be installed. They say a man is not safe in Opaheke at nights now. Last week one of the local residents was trying to persuade a man to leave his neighbour’s property who was not at home, when he attacked and battered round. The intruder, who is a resident of a neighbouring district, found rest in a man’s whare and woke up a mo; e sober man in the morning and not remembering the incident. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of . the Papakura School Committee was held in the school on the 17th May. Present ; Rev W... C. Wood (chairman),. Messrs Tmrner, Rae, Cain,, Hernot and Smith. / • The chairman reported that the Board’s workmen had completed the necessary alterations to enable cocoa scheme to be brought into early operation. By this scheme every child will receive a free cup of cocoa at
lunch time. The committee authorised the purchase of utensils and necessary supplies of sugar and cocoa, and hope that the cocoa will be sinppli.ecl after Monday, May 22ncl. A subc-ommittee waas appointed to report on the cost of erecting gates and constructing a drive from the north corner of the grounds on the Main South Road to and from the school. This is with the idea of erecting Memorial Gates 'in memory of old school boys who lost their lives in the Great War. PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE. We understand the Progressive League has drawn the Town Board’s attention to the bad roads, and urges the Board to take immediate steps to improve them. It advises the Town Board to fill up all t'he holes With small scoria. The Progressive Leagme is holding a public meeting in Richardson’s Had on June Ist, and expects a good attendance of local residents. Also an illustrated lantern tecure will be given the same evening.
The Papakura Cash Store has been under the present management for the past two years. It has filled a ■long felt want in the keeping down of prices of groceries and provisions, e(jc., and by the co-operation of the public of Papakura and surrounding district will continue to do so, Papatoetoe town board
