FATAL ACCIDENT.
A MERCER VJGTIM. SHOT THROUGH THE HEART. The game shooting season which usually provides a number of fatafities, opened yesterday, and this season proved to be no exception, for a very sad accident occurred. A man named , John Henry Walden, a shop assistant, aged about; 40 years, married, and son-in-law of Mr W. H. Dean, of Mercer, were on their way -to indulge in the sport. It appears that at a few minutes to 6 o’clock Mr Dean and deceased were putting the .decoys out for the purpose of enticing the ducks. Deceased went into the boat and in picking up his gun the hammer of the weapon evidently caught on the boat, because it exploded and deceased received the full charge through the heart, Death was instantaneous. The fatality occurred south of Mercer ? near the Whangamarino swamp. Deceased was well known and highly respected, and quite a gloom was cast over the neighbourhood when news of his death was published. He leaves a widow and six children to mourn their lossj An inquesfr was held.
