DISTRICT NEWS.

BUCKLAND. Anzac Day was observed by a service held in the Methodist Church at 11 am. Mr E. Allan presided and suitably addressed the young people on our priceless heritage Rev. SNixon delivered a fine address and Rev. J. Olphert conducted the devotional exercises. The church was crowded to the doors and an impressive service was concluded by all standing whilst the “Dead March ’ was played by< the organist (Miss Allan.) A large number of beautiful wreaths were brought to the monument and placed by the local reui. ned soldiers. Amongst them we noticed several from the different Standards and Primers from scholars of Buckland School, a laurel 1 weath from the boys. Attached to these were cards besring the inscription ' We, the children of our district, with a tender reverent thought, bring a wreath in simple token of our safety dearly bought. In loving memory of our soldiers. For their names are honoured yet. It shall not be said of Buckland that they lived just to fight.” The Methodist Sunday School wreath had the inscription: “Let it not be said of Britons that they can forget. Oh, remember, long remember let your eyes be dim and wet. To the men who died for England. Died New Zealand, homes to save, we bring our wreath in fond rememberance of our soldiers true and brave. The local returned men had a most beautiful wreath inscribed: “To our fallen comrades.”

A Gorman machine gun, presented by the Prime Minister, has now been placed within the enclosure, and is an object of great interest.. At S. Paul’s Anglican Church a sei - vice was held in the afternoon, the Vicar (Rev. J. P. Cowie) preaching an appropriate sermon.
