PAPAKURA PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE.
The first meetnig of the .executive was held on the 10th inst, at which many matters of local interest were discussed. It was resolved to enquire of the Town Board whether an engineer had been placed in charge of the road construction work in the district; at the same time the executive placed on record its opinion shat metal of not more than two in. should be used for the making of roads
Attention was directed bo the limited facilities at present afforded for changing library books and to the inconvenience caused hereby to many residents whose occupations makes it necessary for them to be absent from Papakura during the day. The Town Board will be asked to extend the facilities by opening the library on at least a couple of evenings in the week.
Whilst dealing with the question of the library, Mr H. Johnston suggested that one of \the rooms of the library should be utilised as a public reading room. A deputation will wait on the Board at its next meeting for the purpose of submitting this suggestion.
Two matters of interest to local farmers -were then discussed.’ One ? a suggestion that a stock road should be made between Karaka and the saleyards. Alt present it is necessary to bring- stock all the way down the Beach Road and thence by the Great
the purpose of making further enquiries, and its report is av/ai :ed with interest. Undoubtedly such a road as that suggested would prove a great boon to faimers in the Ivaraka district. The other matter discussed was a proposal that representations should be made to the Railway Department with regard \to delay in forwardingstock to Westfield. For some reason or other it is customary for a portion of the itrain for Westfield to shunt aft Otahuhu, resulting" in the late arrival of stock at its destination. A letter has been addressed to the stock auctioiieers’ association on this subjjeqt, with the request that the matter be taken up with the Railway Department.
An opportunity will soon be presented to residents in Papakura and district to join the League, and having regard to the good work it is doing .on behalf of the district, it is hoped that the membership may be considerably increased.
