PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Pukekolie Borough Council was held on Tuesday night, when there were present : The Mayor (Mr John Routly), Crs D. R. Hamilton, J. Patterson, R. H. McGough, G. Armstrong, A. P. Daysli, J. Kennelly, F. J. Morrow, the JTown Clerk (Mr J. F. Deane), th# fore man (Mr S. Clews) and the electrical engineer (Mr W. Wyatt). LLut. Halt’s Retirement. The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon,. W. F. Massey) acknowledged receipt of the Council’s letter containing representations in connection with the enforced retirement of Lieut. A. R. Hatt from fthe Defence Department: The Premier stated he would be glad to hand the letter to the Minister of Defence, it the same time he would acquaint him with the strong representations which had been made wilth him with a view to seeing whether it is possible for the matter to receive further consideration.—Received. Loan Matters. The Superintendent of the State Advances Office advised that the Minister of Finance has approved of the Council paying interest at a rate not exceeding seven per cent, on the sum of £IO,OOO to be borrowed from the Bank of New Zealand on the security of hypothecated debenture^—Received.

The Prime Minister, Rt, Hon. W. F. Massey, acknowledged receipt of the Council 7 s letter enclosing an application from the Pukekohe Borough Council for permission to pay an increased rate of interest in respect of portion of the Counal’s £84,000 loan for Various municipal purposes. He noted ithat the Council desires authority to pay the interest on £15,000 of the above mentioned loan at the .rate of 6% per cent, in New Zealand and 7 per cent, in Australia, and he should be glad to see that the Council’s application received careful consideration at an early date*—Received.

Application Granted.

The Pukekohe Rugby Union was granted the use of two football fields on the Domain for the forthcoming season. —Granted on same conditions as last year.

Albert Street Footpath

Mr W. H. Lawrie and two others drew the Council’s attention to the state of ithe footpath on the northern side of Albert Street, and urged .Hrat scoria be laid thereon.—Referred to Works Committee for a-report. Tsnders. The tender of Mr E,; C. Closey of £lO7 for the construction of the Franklin Road concrete culvert was accepted. Gift of Roulston Park. The Mayor jreported that ithe erection at Roulston Park to commemorate the donation of the park', was neaping completion. The bases .were in, but the marble work had still to be completed. He hoped in a very short itime to have the structure completed. Subway Affairs. It was reported that the piping of the drain and the fencing at the subway had been completed. Scenic Reserve Leases With regard to the lease of the scenic -reserve it was decided to have the plans and leases prepared ,as soon as possible.

Finance.

It was reported that under the new legislation the overdraft for the incoming financial (year would he £8056 15s Id, which equalled 75 per cent, of the income for the past year, The Mayor moved that accommodation for this amoupt be asked for at the bank. Princess Street Formation. The tender of Mr J. McCormick of £145 for the formation work on Princess Street was accepted. Conveniences a?; Domain. The matter of erecting washingconveniences at the shelter shed at the Domain, introduced by Cr! Patterson, was referred to the Works Committee. It was decided to, extend the water main from the school house in Edinburgh Street to the Domain. Cii Patterson urged that a few loads of shell he put on the Edinburgh Street natli co the Domain.
