There was a memorable scene at the Christchurch Theatre Royal recently, hundreds being unable to gain admission to hear Verbrugghen’s orchestra. The packed audience included a big detachment of off s cers and men from H.M.A.S. There was a remarkable outburst of enthusiasm after the playing of Verbrugghen’s arrangement of British sea songs. Applause and cheers for Admiral Dumaresq were so prolonged that alt last, the Admiral arose from his box, surrounded by his officers and civilian friends, and addressed a few word?, tu the ir.dience, thanking the people of Christchurch for their great welcome of the sh’>\s company. His speech was foliowed hy another remarkable popular outburst.
