FRANKLIN RACES.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

CUP WON BY PRINCE CARL,

The second annual meeting of the Franklin Racing Club was held at Pukekohe before a large attendance, on Saturday last. Uulike last yean excellent weather prevailed, and the special train from Auckland was very well patronised. The racing committee had made excellent arrangements throughout and in conjunction with the popular and untiring secretary, Mr A'f. Daysh, deserve the best congratulations. The racing proved interesting, and some fairly good times were registered. The chief event of (the day was the Franklin Cup, which was again won by Mr U. McKinstrey’s Prince Carl, after a keen tussle with Namutere and Blue Cross. ■At the conclusion of the race the president of ,the club presented the cup to Mr McKinstrey. The cup was presented to the club by Mr J. D. Jones, of Remuera,

Everyone who attended appeared highly satisfied with the day’s sport, and i ( t is confidently predicted that the advent of The totalisator will transform what is now a small meeting into a largely attended and popular fixture.

Racing idown the back stretch the second time Daddy’s Girl ran up to the leader, but the latter sustained the challenge, and going on won by two lengthes, Lady Lyddite three lengths away, beingthird. Time 3m G 2-ss. MAIDEN HANDICAP, of £4O ; 6 furlongs. R. Darrah’s b m Miss Hes,ter, by Penury—Lady Hester, 5.4 (J. W. Pearse) 1 J. C- Gqrrand’s Rarangi, 8.4 (J. Beale) 2 W. E(. A,. Ornstein’s Gwene|tte, 8.4 (Conquest) .. .. .. 3 Also started—Battleplane 8.11, Wee Archie, Merry Times 8.6, Grace Abbey, Just Quiejtly, Fencer, Free State, Sans Gene 8.5, Ellie 8.4, Passionate 8;.2, Poni Poni, Ella Gay 8.0. Wee Archie led along the back, but the field bunched at the turn. Lady Hester made a good run in the straight and won by half a length, Rarangi being a neck away third. Time lm 20 l-ss.

The three placed horses ran in close company nearly all' the way, a good finish seeing Oak Abbey win by a neck from Rosinante, with Commission half a length further' away. Time lm 34 l-ss.

Coulbourne’c Blue Cnoss, 8.13 (Wiggins) .. .. 3 Also started —Tiniroto 7,.8, Herchies 6.12. iBlue Cross led past the post the firqt time, closely attended by Namutere, with Prince Carl handy. The same order was maintained down the back stretch. Entering the straight Namutere challenged, and Prince Carl came fast on the outside. A good finish resulted in Prince Carl getting up to win by a neck from Namutere. with Blue Cross about a length further away in third place. Time 2m 10 2-sss. WAIUKU HANDICAP, of £32 ; 7 furlongs. A. Roulston Bros.’ Flowing Bowl, 7.2 (Husband) .. .. 2 D. Green’s Oak Abbey, 8.10 (Burgess) 3 Also started—Herchies 7.5, Greekson 6.10. Gold Plane led practically throughout and withstood a challenge from Flowing Bowl in the straight, winning by two lengths. Oak Abbey was a similar distance away third. Time lm 19s. BOROUGH HACK HANDICAP, of £4O ; 5 furlongs. T. B. O’Connor’s hr g Rosinante, by Santa Rosa—Mottle, 7.0 (Stanway) .. 1 W. E„ A. Ornstein’s Gwenette, 7.5 (Conquest) . . . . . . 2 W. J. Hawkins’ Royal Mark, 9.0 (Henderson) .. .. 3 Also started—Lady Varco 8.5, Fairmount %10, Merry Times 7.8, Rarangi Free Staite, Fencer Just Quietly 7.6, Miss Hester 7.5, Miss Curran 7.4, Tuki 7.3, Paddy 7.2, Ella Gay 7.0. King Mark and Gwenette went out in front when the field settled down and led into £he straight". Rosinante came with a good late run and won by a head from Gwenette, who was a length in front of Royal Mark. Time lm 4 2-ss.
